“What does Scuttlebutt’s mean?”
Well, we answer, The original context came from two nautical terms; the “butt” (picture a wooden keg) was a wooden cask that stored the fresh water when sailors were at sea. The “scuttle” was the area of the ship where the “butt” was stored. When it was break time, the sailors would gather at the “Scuttle Butt” and drink. This also became a social time, as they could all meet and talk. Now over the years the words joined together and became “scuttlebutt”. This word was used when people would gather together, typically at the office water fountain, and ask one another, “Hey, what’s the scuttlebutt with Jim in accounting?”
Here is the official definition according to Meriam Webster;
1a : a cask on shipboard to contain freshwater for a day’s use
1b: a drinking fountain on a ship or at a naval or marine installation
2: rumor, gossip.

Who We Are
Our family wanted the chance to let you know who we are and what we believe. We relocated from Hobbs, NM in 2004 when my husband, a Floridian native, decided it was time to get back to the coast and build a restaurant, or 2 or 3. In 2005 we opened “Hooks Bar and Grill” in Port Aransas and fell in love with the “Island lifestyle” but more importantly with the people of this area, who are warm, gracious and eager to help those in need. Hooks was our 1st venture on the coast and although we were made an offer we couldn’t refuse and sold, it will always hold a place in our hearts. It was where our two boys learned how to bus tables and seat guests! We did return briefly to New Mexico to help with my parent’s business there – but we always knew we would return.
opportunity knocked and we opened Surfside Sandwich Shoppe here on the Island. Wow – did we grow quickly and the response we got from our guests was awesome. After about a year of cooking and working Surfside, I was so encouraged by the quality of our staff and the genuiness of our guests that I told my husband I was ready to “Go Big”. We believe when things are meant to happen, the doors will open and the doors to what would become “Scuttlebutt’s Seafood Bar and Grill” did just that. In the later part of 2009 we were able to take over an existing nightclub and bar and begin the transformation process.
At this point, I want to give a shout-out to several people. First, my husband, whom I believe has a God given talent to take existing properties and transform them into living, breathing entities with their own unique vibe. Often, in our build out phases he would excitedly tell me his vision. I would politely nod my head in agreement, but honestly I didn’t see it, until he finished it. Then I would say “Oh that’s great honey.” Secondly, our utmost thanks to Sam and Belinda Callaway and Greg and Rita Spitzenberger and my parents, Gil and Becky Clary. Who all believed in our vision and invested in our dream.
So what is Scuttlebutt’s?
It is the type of restaurant that my husband and I would like to hang out in and be able to take our kids to. We do have a large menu, but we know that there will be something for everyone. We believe in making our food from scratch – home-made dressings, sauces, desserts. We hand bread fried food, cut our own steaks to order, make those 1/2lb burger patties here. Soups from recipes not from cans – you get the jist. My personal guarantee is that you will not leave our restaurants hungry. We all work hard and when you go out to eat you deserve great food, great service and a great atmosphere. We have been blessed with a thriving business since we opened in 2010. One of the keys to our success is our people. We could not ask for a better staff. I will say the majority of our crew believe in our vision and our “Heart of a Servant” mentality. We are in the service industry and if you don’t have the heart of servant then you should not be in our industry. Our passion for the food industry keeps us striving to become better every day, our staff keeps us young at heart and our customers become a part of our Scuttlebutt’s family .
